Hello fellow Gardeners,
As the days get shorter and the nights grow “slightly” colder, November is a crucial time to prepare your allotment for the winter months. While the growing season may be winding down, there's still plenty to do to ensure a bountiful harvest next year. Plus the fact I’ve just put my house on the market and have loads more jobs to get done before I move. So please forgive me if the content is a little light over the next few months 🙏
Key Jobs for November:
Harvesting:
Continue harvesting root vegetables like carrots, parsnips, and beetroot.
Pick winter greens such as kale, spinach, and chard regularly.
Collect any remaining fruit from fruit trees and bushes.
Planting:
Plant garlic cloves, spacing them evenly and planting them about 2 inches deep.
Sow broad beans for an early spring harvest.
Consider sowing winter salads under cloches or in a cold frame for a continuous supply of fresh leaves. (my lettuce is looking fantastic)
Protecting Plants:
Protect tender plants from frost with fleece or by moving them into a cold frame or greenhouse.
Mulch around plants to insulate the soil and protect roots from freezing.
Tidying Up:
Clear away any dead or diseased plant material and compost it.
Clean and store garden tools to prevent rust and damage.
Cut back perennials and ornamental grasses.
Planning for Next Year:
Start planning your crop rotation for next year.
Order seeds and plants for the upcoming season.
Design your planting plan, considering the size and layout of your allotment.
Tips for the Month:
Check for Pests: Keep an eye out for pests like slugs, snails, and mice, and take appropriate measures to control them.
Water Wisely: While the weather is cooler, it's still important to water your plants, especially newly planted ones.
Embrace the Winter: November is a great time to enjoy the quieter side of gardening. Take time to reflect on the past season and plan for the future.
